FROM STATUS TO STATS 02/15/11 – Natural Gas

Because I tend to think in pictures, I thought it’d be interesting to take something that most of us see on a daily basis – a Facebook status update and draw it. Then, to take things a step further, I like to see what information is out there that is relevant to the status update. Thereby connecting the two: seemingly random thoughts that actually tie into human behavior and patterns. Or perhaps, its the other way around?

SEEMS ONLY APPROPRIATE TO CALL THIS ONE ‘NATURAL GAS’

If it weren’t for the picture that was included of Brandon’s adorable little baby, this post might’ve been easily misinterpreted as something altogether different. To say my mind went in several different directions trying to decide how best to illustrate this would be an understatement…and as you can see I narrowed it down to 2.

USA IS RANKED #14 WHEN IT COMES TO NATURAL GAS VEHICLE STATISTICS
This according to a 2009 report from NGV Global

What is interesting, is we are #14, with 110,000 vehicles. And while we fall behind the following countries (from #1-#13): Pakistan, Argentina, Iran, Brazil, India, China, Columbia, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Thailand, Bolivia, Egypt in the quantity of vehicles (and I’m sure this number has increased since this report) – USA ranked #4 with the # of fueling stations at 1,300 which is a much better ratio than the other countries at approximately 85 cars per station.

ITS GOOD FOR A LAUGH

When doing my research for stats, I came across this story – I promise its not my own!

“I was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me….. Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.”

DID YOU KNOW?
On average a person produces about half a liter of gas per day, distributed over an average of passing gas 14 times a day!

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BABY’S GAS SMILE & A REAL ONE.
Now this is where this all stemmed from. Source: ehow.com

• Note the baby’s age. Most start smiling between 4 and 8 weeks of age. Before that, it is most likely a gas smile, and not a social smile.

• Watch to see if there is a trigger. A social smile is usually due to the actions of a parent or someone else the baby is familiar with, whereas a gas smile is usually not accompanied by a trigger. The social smile can be in response to a noise or to something in her sight.
• See if her cheeks rise. One of the main differences between a social smile and a gas smile is whether the cheeks rise with the smile. With a gas smile, the cheeks stay lowered, but the social smile lifts the cheeks. With the cheeks lifted, sometimes the eyes will appear squinted, yet another clue the smile is a social one.

• Notice if the baby’s mouth opens. An open-mouthed smile is a sure sign of a social smile.

• Understand that the baby’s smiles may be infrequent at first. While the baby is still getting the hang of social smiles, they may be few and far between. But soon enough, the baby will be smiling more and more.
